Literacy describes a variety of skills--oral, visual, spatial, spoken, and written--
that involve the use of language.
Reading & Writing WorkshopOur district uses the writing and reading workshop model. Students learn by examining what makes a piece of "good writing". Then, they talk, write, read, and publish original work based on the craft of quality authorship. I will post samples of work, as well as articles about the literacy here.
---------------------------------------------------------------- PICKING A JUST RIGHT BOOK There are a variety of resources out there to help pick books that will help you grow as a reader. A quick rule is the "5-word rule": open a page in the book that is solid with writing. If you find 5 words on that page that you cannot pronounce or understand, try a different book for pleasure reading. A great resource for book levels is Beaverton's leveled book lists. I've included that link, plus links to the Multnomah County Library leveled lists, to the right under Useful Links-----> |

USEFUL LINKS *Leveled book lists from Beaverton and Portland School Districts, as well as libraries. https://somebodyslibrarian.wordpress.com/2012/10/17/databases-of-levelled-books/ *RAZ kids allows students to read at their own speed while developing vocab and comprehension: https://www.kidsa-z.com/main/Login *Spelling Videos use music to master spelling patterns and include these ones we'll use in class: Double The Consonant with short vowels The Silent E Song by Tom Lehrer When 2 Vowels Go A'Walking from Between The Lions What about Spelling/Vocab lists? *www.spellingcity.com/terresacc is where I post my spelling lists each week. Kids can access their words, print them out, and play many of the vocabulary games just by accessing the page. Each list has a spelling rule in the window below the weekly title. If a student actually logs into their account (see me for your login and password), they can also track their spelling quizzes and use the entire website. |
Beaverton Literacy ResourcesCheck out the Washington County Library System! We have 3 amazing libraries nearby. The Beaverton Central Library (there is a theater on the 1st floor and a playground nearby), the Aloha library (started, believe it or not, by a 3rd grader who attended Barnes!), and the Cedar Mill Library (nationally famous for its volunteer program, locally famous for a great childrens section). OBOB practice, bilingual books, various clubs, and the Passport to Adventure are among the great things you'll find at the library!
Powells Bookstore in Cedar Hills Crossing is part of the largest bookstore on the west coast. It also hosts The League of Exceptional Writers, a monthly workshop where authors and illustrators share their knowledge with kids 8 to 18 years old who are interested in creating books. Check for it on their monthly calendar, starting in October. It usually meets the 2nd Saturday of each month around 2:00. -------------------------------------------------------------------- And just for fun, a little language history... |
